Underwater Animals | Gold Leaf Painting

Many endangered species are Underwater Animals here a secretive sea horse hiding in the seaweed is enhanced with 22 carat gold leaf. The gold leaf is laid on base of gesso, which raised the gold slightly above the paper adding both sparkle and texture to the piece.

The gesso has to be made by hand in small quantities and uses the same process and recipe as those used by the monks and scribes who created the illuminated manuscripts such the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.

This is a slow painstaking process as each stage requires time to dry before the next step can be taken.
This could be an ideal gift for a nature lover,  or someone who finds calm in a natural environment  as I find being beside water very restful. Perhaps chosen for a special anniversary or birthday or simply a gift for someone who loves our planet.

Each leaf is individually gilded by hand.

• Neil Garrick-Maidment, founder of conservation charity, the Seahorse Trust, said: "We have seen so many seahorses because the food chain has recovered, giving seahorses plenty of food to eat, and crucially, somewhere to hide."

  Seahorses live in long seagrass that is often damaged by boats and other human activity.

  The UK has two native seahorse species, the spiny and the short-snouted seahorse. Both were granted protected status in 2008 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
