History of the Birman cat:

The breed name is derived from Birmanie, the French form of Burma. No clear record of the breed exists, although many believe the legends that claim they originated as companions of the temple priests in northern Burma.

Birmans were almost wiped out as a breed during World War II, and only 2 cats were alive in Europe at the end of the war. They had to be heavily outcrossed with long-hair breeds such as the Persian and Siamese to rebuild the Birman breed base.  Thankfully, by the early 1950’s pure Birman litters were again being produced, and the restored breed was recognised in Britain in 1965, and by the Cat Fancy Association in 1966. 

The Birman, called 'the Sacred Cat of Burma' , is a beautiful domestic cat breed, with bewitching sapphire-blue eyes, a pale, fluffy coat, and a gentle, loving personality.  The contrasting white "gloves" cover the front of each paw, which is the trademark of the breed.
